Karmazin challenges agencies

CBS Corp. CEO Mel Karmazin today challenged agencies and advertisers to end TV sweeps periods. Speaking at the American Association of Advertising Agencies Media Conference in New Orleans, Mr. Karmazin said advertisers and agencies have the power to stop the sweeps periods, which the networks stack with special programming to boost ratings and ad prices. In addition, Mr. Karmazin repeated his oft-made proposition that he would be interested in buying NBC if federal rules allowed him.
