Kinsley's lessons

Microsoft's online magazine Slate will soon begin charging users an annual fee of $19.95, Editor Michael Kinsley said at the American Magazine Conference in Bermuda on Tuesday. By doing that, Slate follows high-profile sites like The Wall Street Journal in seeking to tap a new revenue stream on the Web. Whether Slate will be successful in charging users remains to be seen, Mr. Kinsley said, but "somebody is going to figure this out and I think we have a good chance..

Playboy will also set up a paid site in November and plans to charge users $6.95 a month, said Playboy Enterprises VP-New Media Eileen Kent.

In his speech, Mr. Kinsley said it is more difficult than he had thought it would be to get users to read long articles on computer screens but he still believes the Web can be a journalistic medium. "The technology should serve the journalism, and not the other way around," he said.
