Labatt ahead of Molson's market share, first time in seven years

TORONTO -- For the first time since the 1989 merger of Molson Breweries and Carling O'Keefe, Labatt Breweries says it has pulled ahead of arch-rival Molson in Canadian beer market share. Labatt president Hugo Powell says Labatt currently has a 46.5% market share nationally, while Molson's share has slid to a current share of 46.1% from 46.7% a year ago. The gain was credited to more aggressive marketing and efficient operations at Labatt and was made despite a cool summer which saw beer sales down by 11% in June and 2% in July.
