Latvians name vodka after Russian leader Zhirinovsky

Published on .

RIGA -- The Rubins distillery in Bauska, Latvia, has named its newest vodka brand "Zhirinovsky" after the Russian Liberal Democratic Party leader, Vladimir Zhirinovsky.

Zhirinovksy is known in the West for his extreme nationalist political views. Rubins President Leon Osipov says Zhirinovsky extended the bottling license as a means of replenishing his party's coffers after the recent election campaign.

Last spring Zhirinovsky reportedly sent proposals to several distilleries in Latvia and Lithuania, but Lithuanians expressed no interest.
