(April 25, 2001) -- Interpublic Group of Cos.' Campbell Mithun, Minneapolis, confirmed last week the agency laid off 21 people, or about 3% of its 604-person staff.

"While this was a difficult decision, the harsh reality of the current economic climate and the larger industry downturn made this a necessity," an April 19 memo from Les Mouser, CEO, and John Hurst, chief creative officer, informed employees. Several staffers included in the cut worked on the Kmart account before it went to Omnicom Group's TBWA/Chiat/Day, Playa del Ray, Calif.

Separately, Young & Rubicam, Chicago, cut five from its staff this week as a part of a restructuring, the agency confirmed. None of the jobs will be replaced, said Kary McIlwain, agency president. -- Kate MacArthur
