Wednesday brought a flurry of action among the major players in the local online service market. As Microsoft Corp. prepares to launch Sidewalk on Thursday in Seattle, Digital City proclaimed The Seattle Times as its first major metro newspaper affiliate. The paper will be Digital City's exclusive Seattle affiliate, providing news and features to the Digital City service. The two will share revenue from the partnership.

Also, CitySearch, a startup competitor, said it formed an alliance with The Toronto Star to create a Toronto city guide. The paper was a participant in the most recent round of funding for CitySearch. Bruce Annan was named general manager of Toronto CitySearch; he also serves as director of Torstar Electronic Publishing. CitySearch on Tuesday said it signed an agreement with BackWeb, a push technology company, to deliver community information to computer desktops.
