LOWE CREATES A REFRESHING USE OF VIDEO VERITE IN A HILARIOUS SPOT FOR COURTYARD BY MARRIOTT

Courtyard by Marriott: "Missed Cue" ( Lowe & Partners/SMS; Five Union Square Productions, Tom Schiller, director; :30). Here's yet another video verite commercial, one designed to look like footage from a real newscast or sporting event. It's shot on tape, poorly lit and awkwardly framed. You really have to love these underproduced gems, because if the spot looks this bad it's got to have a clever idea to make it work.

Courtyard by Marriott's concept of stressing the need for getting a decent night's sleep is illustrated by the guest speaker at a meeting, who clearly is off in the clouds somewhere. Introduced from the podium, he bursts into enthusiastic applause along with everyone else on the dias until the person sitting next to him leans over and whispers in his ear that he's the guy they just introduced. Startled, he jumps to his feet.
