Lycos to buy Matchmaker.com for $44 million

Internet portal Lycos has agreed to buy MetroSplash, the owner of personal classifieds site Matchmaker.com. Lycos said it would pay about $44 million in cash, plus the assumption of their stock option plan. Matchmaker.com said it has more than 4 million members in its online dating community. Lycos, which agreed to be acquired by Terra Networks, an Internet company for Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking audiences, has also recently purchased financial site Quote.com and Gamesville.com, a sweepstakes site.
