Lycos becomes latest to offer free ISP

Published on .

Web portal Lycos Feb. 29 launched Lycos Free Internet Access, joining Yahoo!, NetZero, Freeinternet.com and others in offering free dial-up Internet access. Lycos' service will come through 1stUp.com, a provider of private-label, ad-supported Internet service. 1stUp already provides ISP services for CMGI's AltaVista Co. and for Excite@Home. 1stUp is majority owned by CMGI, which is a major Lycos investor. CMGI and Lycos have been pursuing separate paths since a falling out over a Lycos merger that failed last year in the wake of objections from CMGI. Separately, Excite this week is changing the name of its free ISP to FreeLane from FreeWorld; the 6-week-old service claims more than 500,000 users.
