Lycos wins patent for searching technology

Published on .

Internet search engine company Lycos announced the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office has awarded it a patent, filed by Carnegie Mellon University covering Lycos' spider technology.

Lycos has the exclusive rights to this technology, which allows Web users to gather targeted information from Web pages. Spider searching is widespread throughout the Web, and it's possible that other search engine companies or sites using the indexing technology will be forced to pay royalties to Lycos.
