M&C Saatchi's new Melbourne boss fails to show up

MELBOURNE -- M&C Saatchi has been sent into a spin following the eleventh-hour decision by Chris Brooking, the man it had hired to head up its new Melbourne office, to stay with HKM, the Clemenger BBDO-owned agency in Wellington, New Zealand.

M&C opened the new office this week after winning the $20m ANZ Banking Group business last week. Tom Dery, M&C's Asia-Pacific chairman, said he was now "going like a bat out of hell" to replace Brooking but stressed the ANZ business would not be compromised.

"We're able to run the business okay, but we have to move pretty fast," said Dery. The agency has made a number of key appointments but has still to decide on a creative director, although a creative team has already moved from Sydney to work on the bank's business.
