M&C Saatchi wins Bethlehem 2000 promotion

LONDON -- M&C Saatchi, London, has been assigned the task of turning Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus Christ, into a central focus for the world's millennium celebrations. The through-the-line Bethlehem 2000 project is expected to be worth around $50 million.

M&C Saatchi's London office is already working on the U.K.'s millennium celebrations with the New Millennium Experience Company.

The agency will work on the Bethlehem business with London-based Caribiner, the live event company which staged the Hong Kong handover ceremony and which is also working with M&C on the U.K. event.

Celebrations in Bethlehem, which are reportedly aiming to attract six million visitors, will run from December 1999 through Easter 2001. Hanan Ashrawi, minister for higher education in the Palestinian National Authority, is leading the project.
