April ad pages for consumer magazines jumped 4.5% compared with a year ago to 18,427.2, according to Publishers Information Bureau. Ad revenue was up 9.2% to $887.1 million. The news was particularly encouraging because last year's ad page recovery really began to take off in the second quarter after a relatively weak first quarter. Through April, ad pages hit 66,360.5, up 8.4% over the same period last year.
Maurice Saatchi has wooed Tom Dery, CEO of DDB Needham in Melbourne, to join his New Saatchi operation as an equity partner and head of the Asia/Pacific region, Sydney, where New Saatchi has just won the $35 million Qantas Airways international account. Mr. Dery said he would start work immediately on opening New Saatchi offices in Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong and Sydney.
