The number of new consumer magazines launched in 1994 hit a record 832, up 6.3% from a year earlier, according to University of Mississippi Professor Samir Husni, in his Guide to New Consumer Magazines. But the competition for advertising seems to be getting more intense. The number of ad pages in each new magazine declined to 17.6, down from 20 a year ago. The top categories of new entries were sports, with 67 launches, and epicurean, with 45. Sex-oriented magazines, the perennial No. 1 category for the past six years, dropped to third, tied with crafts/games/hobbies and music.
