New Campaign Is Aimed at African-American Market

DETROIT (AdAge.com) -- Basketball great and Olympic gold medalist Earvin "Magic" Johnson and his son, Andre, star in a new TV commercial being released this week
Magic Johnson and his new Navigator are the gist of this first of the new campaign's spots.

for the Ford Motor Co.'s 2004 Lincoln Navigator sport utility vehicle.

The national commercial is the first element of the former basketball star's multiyear marketing deal with Lincoln Mercury. WPP's Y&R Group of Dearborn, Mich., handles the account.

Wife Cookie appears in spot
Mr. Johnson and his wife, Cookie, will appear in an upcoming Navigator TV spot aimed at African Americans. The ad was created by WPP's UniWorld, an ad agency specializing in African-American marketing.

Mr. Johnson, who achieved superstar status during his 13 NBA seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, revealed he was HIV positive 12 years ago -- a public act that put a widely admired and highly sympathetic face on the HIV/AIDS problem.
