Marriott signs as Olympic sponsor

Published on .

Marriott International, Bethesda, Md., signed to be an official sponsor of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and of the 2000, 2002 and 2004 U.S. Olympic teams. Marriott operates 25 properties in the Salt Lake City area and has its name on Brigham Young University's basketball arena. Marriott said the deal marks the largest sports sponsorship in its history. It involves the flagship Marriott brand, Residence Inn, Renaissance Hotels and Resorts, Fairfield Inn, SpringHill Suites and TownePlace Suites. The organizers of the Salt Lake Olympics have had some trouble recruiting sponsors because of the bribery scandal surrounding the selection of Salt Lake City for the 2000 Games; Marriott is the 25th sponsor.
