McCann to acquire Weber Group PR

Published on .

McCann-Erickson Worldwide is set to acquire the Weber Group, a Boston-based high-tech public relations firm on Thursday, according to executives familiar with the transaction.

Weber ranks 18th on the 1996 O'Dwyer's Directory of PR Firms, with $12.3 million in revenue. It was the fastest-growing firm in the top 20 in 1995, with a 60% gain in revenue.

The acquisition gives McCann a foothold in a fifth "communications corridor." McCann Chairman-CEO John Dooner's growth strategy for the agency consists of becoming a world leader in a number of fast-growing corridors such as healthcare communications, promotion marketing and direct marketing.

Earlier this year, McCann acquired Ad:Vent, an event marketing firm, and bundled it with its Momentum division to form the promotions corridor. It also acquired a leading healthcare agency, Torre Renta Lazur Healthcare Group, and hired direct-marketing legend Stan Rapp to oversee an ambitious acquisition plan in that field.
