Mr. Dowley, 35, will remain in New York and is expected to widen his responsibilities to other McCann integrated services divisions, to include relationship marketing at MRM Worldwide and possibly other areas. He has overseen several international acquisitions and may be asked to expand those duties.
Last week, he was in London putting the final touches on the acquisition of sales promotion agency PDP, Manchester, England. One of the largest sales promotion groups in the U.K., PDP has capitalized billings of about $100 million and beefs up McCann's Momentum presence in Europe.
McCann will fold its U.K. event marketing agency, EXP Momentum, London, into the new unit to be called PDP Momentum.
The latest deal is typical of Mr. Dowley's three-year reign at Momentum; the McCann unit has gone from $20 million in revenue to about $110 million this year. From its roots as an event marketing organization, Momentum has grown under Mr. Dowley with acquisitions such as promotion agency Louis London, St. Louis, and entertainment public relations agency PMK, Los Angeles and New York.
Mr. Dowley confirmed his new post at WorldGroup but declined to talk about specific duties. He did, however, talk about the overall marketing services groups at McCann.
"It's going to take more coordination as we figure out how to keep the tremendous momentum we already have going and then how to take it to the next level," Mr. Dowley said. "Also important is how we integrate, especially on behalf of our big global clients who are interested in total communications integration."
He cited, as a recent example of that kind of integration, the launch of American Express Co.'s new Blue credit card. Momentum worked with AmEx's other agencies, Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide and Bronnercom, to launch the card.
Mr. Dowley first joined McCann in June 1996 when he sold his event marketing company, Ad:vent, to Momentum. He became chairman-CEO of Momentum in December of that year.
