McD's welcomes '96

McDonald's Corp. is awarding a slew of prizes to Times Square celebrants on New Year's Eve. Big Mac will give away 20,000 pom-poms containing certificates for free Big Macs, as well as one trip for two to the Olympic Games and one trip to eat a McDonald's meal with gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee. The New York event begins a year of "Great Breaks" promotions at McDonald's.

Cable revenues up
Ad revenues for the 21 basic cable networks monitored by Price Waterhouse for the Broadcast Cable Financial Management Association rose to $350.6 million in October, up 18% from a year ago. Year-to-date, ad spending on the networks is up 18% to $2.72 billion. In another sign that direct response sales are accounting for a greater share of scatter advertising deals in the fourth quarter, fixed charge direct response sales surged 46% to $15.2 million and per-inquiry sales were up 30% to $1.7 million on the networks.
