MCI ads debut

Published on .

MCI Communications Corp. this week introduces new TV spots on NBC's telecast of the Olympic Games. One spot, touting MCI's new Friends & Family Free plan, features MCI spokeswoman Whoopi Goldberg in a Red Baron-type plane writing the words "Free Hour Every Month" in the sky. The campaign will be complemented by actual skywriting over Atlanta during the Games. The second ad, "People Like These," features MCI sales reps and focuses on real examples of MCI's customer service. In addition to TV, "People Like These" will run as print ads in USA Today throughout the Games. MCI said it has spent more than $20 million in media alone to run 82 spots during the Games. MCI is also sponsoring 15 prime time vignettes, called "The Last 24 Hours," which feature NBC footage covering athletic highlights from the previous 24 hours. The campaign was created by Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmetterer/Euro RSCG, New York.
