Toronto Holding Company Continues Its Recent Buying Spree

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- MDC Partners, the Toronto-based agency holding company that has been on a buying spree of late, is sending one of its top executives to London to look for potential acquisition targets.

New York creative agency Cliff Freeman & Partners. Two months earlier, the company acquired a 60% stake in another New York agency, Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners. MDC already had a stake in Crispin Porter & Bogusky, Miami, and majority ownership of Margeotes Fertitta Partners, New York.

Michaelides and Bednash
The holding company is now looking overseas; MDC's chief strategist, Chuck Porter, is headed to London. Mr. Porter said he is talking to a number of agencies, including Michaelides and Bednash, a boutique specializing in communications strategythat counts Unilever, Hachette Fillipachi's Elle, the magazine Time Out and J&B Scotch as clients.

Last week MDC acquired a minority stake in Minneapolis start-up Mono, formed by two former Fallon creative directors, Michael Hart and Chris Lange. The agency is headed by Jim Scott, a former account director with Interpublic Group of Cos.' Carmichael Lynch.

The acquisition comes just a few days after MDC also agreed to acquire a 65% stake in Henderson Bas, Toronto. The 41-person interactive agency works on accounts for Levi's, Nike, Sprint Canada, Molson and Yamaha Motors.
