Media Metrix released its first report on Windows 98 installed projection data, which is based on actual usage and ownership of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 95 operating system. By tracking activity on Windows PCs, Media Metrix plans to report on Windows 98 installation as it rolls out. According to the report, 63.5%, or 22.4 million U.S. home Windows PCs, have Windows 95 as the primary operating system, compared with 36.3%, or 12.8 million PCs, with Windows 3.1. The report also found that 45%, or 9.5 million PCs, still in use in the U.S. upgraded to Windows 95.
