Forty-four million U.S. adults, or 23% of the adult population, currently use the Internet, according to the Spring 1998 Cyber Stats report from Mediamark Research Inc. The syndicated survey was conducted face-to-face in 20,000 respondents' homes and projected to represent the total U.S. adult population. MRI Cyber Stats reports are issued twice yearly.

In other findings, at-home usage of the Internet had trailed the workplace until two years ago. Currently, at-home usage exceeds the workplace by 26%, and 27.6 million people are estimated to have accessed the Internet from home vs. 20.4 million from work. It found 49% of adult users are 35-to-54 years old and that men continue to use the Internet and online services more than women (54% vs. 46%).
