Mercury on Tuesday showed members of the Midwest Automotive Media Association in Chicago the first artist's rendering of the planned Mercury Mountaineer, the Ford Motor Co. division's first sport utility vehicle. Development is still in progress, but production will begin in the spring of 1996. Mercury executives said sport utility sales have increased from 750,000 units in 1990 to more than 1.3 million in 1994. Some 1.5 million units are forecast for this year, with continued growth anticipated.
