Merriam-Webster has launched a reference and information service area on commercial service America Online. The centerpiece of the area is a searchable version of the company's collegiate dictionary, allowing instant access to more than 214,000 definitions online. AOL members can also chat about language and word usage, visit the online bookstore and speak directly to Merriam-Webster editors.

soaps get own channel
Liberty Media Corp, a unit of Tele-Communications Inc., announced the creation of the Soap Channel, a new cable TV programming service dedicated to soap operas. The channel, scheduled to launch by the end of 1995, will televise currently running soap operas daily, as well as reruns of off-network and international soaps. Other soap-related programming will be featured, including talk shows, news and transactional programming. The channel initially will be available as a part-time service to the 10 million TCI subscribers who receive the tv! channel.
