The U.S. Department of Commerce has designated the week of Oct. 6 as National Metric Week, and Oct. 10 (10th day of the 10th month) as National Metric Day. The department is encouraging participation by businesses, schools, federal offices and others to encourage increased use of the metric system. Because 95% of the world's population uses the metric system as its standard system of measurement, the department notes, a complete transition to the metric system is inevitable in the U.S.
