WASHINGTON-Howard Metzenbaum will become chairman of the Consumer Federation of America upon his retirement later this year from the U.S. Senate.

Sen. Metzenbaum (D., Ohio), an occasional-and caustic-critic of advertising, said he will focus his time on banking, consumer credit and antitrust issues.

The senator, who said he will take no pay for his CFA role, will be chairman of an umbrella group of 240 consumer groups with a combined membership of about 50 million.
