Published on .

Microsoft is taking a 20% equity stake in RealNames Corp., a developer of technology that simplifies Web navigation. The companies will develop joint marketing projects related to Web navigation and the use of brand names and trademarks on the Internet. Microsoft's Internet Explorer version 5.0 has used RealNames technology since summer; under the new deal, versions 3.0 and 4.0 also will integrate the technology. AltaVista, About.com, Go.com and other search portals also have integrated RealNames' technology.
