Microsoft Corp. intends to position Microsoft Network as the best vehicle to navigate the Internet. Chairman Bill Gates, speaking today to 2,800 attendees of the first Microsoft Interactive Media conference in Long Beach, Calif., said, "Think of the Microsoft Network as an Internet community."

The company confirmed it will include direct Internet connections when MSN launches along with Windows 95 on Aug. 24. MSN also unveiled its first advertiser, Swatch watches. Swatch's site, created and produced by Johns+Gorman Films, Los Angeles, touts the watchmaker's role as official timekeeper of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.

Also at the conference, Eddie Bauer showcased a retailing application and basketball star Shaquille O'Neal demonstrated his ShaqWorld online sports service.
