Microsoft sticking by online launch for Aug. 24

Published on .

Despite increased Justice Department pressures on Microsoft Corp.'s Microsoft Network online service, General Manager Russell Siegelman insisted the service will launch Aug. 24 simultaneous with the Windows 95 software introduction. Mr. Siegelman said the service will launch with 250 content providers and a World Wide Web browser; Microsoft earlier had said the browser wouldn't be ready till late year, which would have put Microsoft Network months behind rivals with Internet access. Justice last week stepped up its review of whether the service poses an antitrust threat because access software for the service is built into Windows 95, but the department hasn't said whether it will take action against Microsoft.
