MSN Sidewalk freezes hiring

Published on .

Microsoft Corp.'s online city guide, MSN Sidewalk, has implemented a hiring freeze, according to an executive close to the company. This sparks further speculation that Microsoft is planning to sell Sidewalk. Microsoft did not return calls by press time.

A likely buyer is Ticketmaster Online-CitySearch, which Internet research Forrester Research in June predicted would gobble up Microsoft's "stalled city guide strategy.''

A spokesperson at Ticketmaster Online-CitySearch declined to comment on Forrester's prediction, but said the search service "talks to companies all the time and Microsoft is one of them.'' Sidewalk has a network of more than 50 local U.S. sites, as well as some international sites.
