The position, director of corporate communications, is a heavy commitment but described as part-time, allowing Mr. Muirhead to remain involved with agency management and key clients, such as British Airways.
British Airways CEO Robert Ayling is chairman of the Millennium Exhibition, which will celebrate the turn of the century, and encouraged Mr. Muirhead to get involved.
Mr. Muirhead has been spending more time in London lately. Agency President Brent Bouchez and Executive Creative Director David Page, who arrived last fall from Ammirati Puris Lintas, are adding some responsibility for staff and new business.
Mr. Muirhead moved to New York in February 1994 to head the North American operations of Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising Worldwide. He left less than a year later to help Maurice and Charles Saatchi start M&C Saatchi.
A spokesman for the exhibition said it is too early to discuss an ad agency, and denied M&C Saatchi will be chosen automatically.
But with Mr. Muirhead in charge of advertising and M&C Saatchi handling British Airways and the ruling Conservative Party, the agency stands a good chance of benefiting from the Millennium Exhibition and Mr. Muirhead's contact with U.K. companies that sign up as sponsors.
