Murdoch's Sky pays $1B for English soccer TV rights

Published on .

[london] Rupert Murdoch's British Sky Broadcasting London has signed a $1 billion deal with English soccer's Football Association Premier League giving it the live TV rights to top class English soccer games for another four years.

The deal, believed by the Premier League to be the biggest TV rights agreement ever signed in the U.K., dwarfs the $300 million deal Sky paid for the rights in 1992.

That deal expires in June, 1997. The new agreement will end in mid-2001. Sky won the bidding this time against The Mirror Group which pitched jointly with Carlton Communications. Another bid was submitted by MAI United News & Media.
