Roche will replace Antonio Garcia de Blas, who had already notified Nabisco of his wish to step down when a successor was found. Garcia de Blas will remain on Nabisco Iberia's board of directors and serve as a special advisor and business development consultant for the executive committee of Nabisco International.
Roche will relocate to Barcelona, headquarters for Nabisco's Europe, Middle East, Africa division. He has worked for Mavesa, one of Venezuela's biggest food companies, since 1982. Before that, he worked in product management with food and cosmetics companies.
Nabisco, producer of such global brands as Oreo cookies, Ritz crackers and Chips Ahoy!, markets products in the U.S., Canada and 85 other countries around the world. It claims worldwide sales for 1996 of $8.9bn.
