Mike Harper is stepping down as CEO of RJR Nabisco Holding Corp. Mr. Harper, who will remain RJR chairman, cited "compelling personal circumstances" related to his family. The new CEO is Steven F. Goldstone, the company's president and a former senior partner in the law firm of Davis Polk & Wardwell who joined the company as senior counsel just last May.
The move and RJR's choice of an attorney to head the company may fuel speculation about a breakup of the company. Investor Bennett LeBow, president of Brooke Group, and Carl Icahn have launched a proxy fight aimed at splitting RJR into two companies. Brooke Group owns Liggett Group, a rival cigarette company.
