The impending shutdown of Napster triggered a 92% jump in daily traffic to the site for its file-swapping software last week, according to the Internet ratings report for the week ended July 23 by Nielsen/NetRatings. Napster traffic peaked at 849,000 unique home visitors on July 28, the day the federal court granted a stay, from July 25, the day before the court's ruling. The site broke the 800,000 unique visitor mark both on Friday and Saturday, covering more than 3% of all active home Internet users each day. On July 28, when the stay was announced, downloads of Napster software more than doubled from the day before to 22% of its audience, indicating renewed interest.
