Netscape highlights 150 Web sites in Destinations program

By Published on .

Netscape Communications Corp. is using its popular home page to promote its pick of the hottest Web sites, generating traffic for other sites at no cost--at least for now.

The service, Netscape Destinations, highlights more than 150 sites in 12 categories, including general news, business, sports, entertainment and tech news.

PROGRAM GETS REDESIGN

Netscape launched Destinations in April but last week unveiled an expanded, redesigned program. Barbara Gore, publisher of Netscape's home page, says sites must agree to feature an icon to download the new Netscape 3.0 browser.

In return, the sites get access to the 2.9 million visitors to Netscape's site.

Down the road, Netscape "won't necessarily turn this into a revenue producing area," but it may explore ways for Netscape and sites to cross promote one another, Ms. Gore said.

Netscape will soon launch a campaign to promote Destinations. C3 Design, New York City, handles the creative portion of the account while Dahlin Smith White, Salt Lake City, will place the media.
