Netscape signs more search deals

Published on .

Netscape Communications Corp., Mountain View, Calif., signed new deals with four search engines -- AltaVista, Infoseek, LookSmart, Lycos -- that will be "premier providers" on the new Net Search Page area of Netscape's popular Netcenter site effective June 1. Excite earlier agreed to pay Netscape $70 million in a comprehensive deal that will give Excite 25% of the page's search rotations; a new Netscape branded search, developed by Excite, will get 25%; the four premier providers will split the rest of rotations. Netscape is negotiating a deal to make search leader Yahoo! a "distinguished provider," a partnership category encompassing such areas on the search page as "Find a Person" or "Business and Topic Specific Searches."
