A new study from Nielsen Media Research and CommerceNet found that more than 58 million adults in the U.S. and Canada are on the Internet, with more than 30 million online who logged on in the past 24 hours. Web users were measured at 48 million people and the number of people who have made a purchase on the Web is up to almost 10 million. On the downside for e-commerce, however, 54% of Web users said they were not likely to make Web purchases in the future. E-mail--used by 59 million people in North America or about 26% of the population--was also tracked.

Dataquest released a new survey that shows 10.2% of U.S. households plan to purchase a new PC in the next six months, an increase of 1.5 million households from last fall's survey. The latest figures from Dataquest show 43% of U.S. households already have a PC; an increase from fall 1996, when only 35% were PC owners.

CondeNet's Epicurious Food Web site will become a TV show on the Discovery Channel in the fourth quarter of 1998. The working title is Epicurious TV; it will begin with 18 episodes exploring the entire culinary experience from a lifestyle and relationship perspective. Epicurious Food serves more than 7 million pages per month and is the most heavily trafficked of CondeNet's stable of four Web sites, including Epicurious Travel, Swoon and Phys.

BDInteractive has launched a new kind of banner that works by pushing information, as opposed to traditional banner reliance on clicking through. PushBANNER is a Java-enabled technology that streams information through banner ads, such as stock quotes, news and other information.
