Lycos signed a long-term deal with Netscape Communications Corp. to support and launch its Open Directory Project, a directory of sites categorized by volunteers. Lycos will use the directory for Lycos.com and HotBot.com search services.

Meredith Corp.'s Better Homes & Gardens Online has launched an online shopping area where consumers can buy Better Homes & Gardens books, other Meredith products and name-brand products from affiliates' online stores. The area will include links to several main product categories, including food and wine, gardening, and health and fitness.

Online advertising management company AdKnowledge, Palo Alto, Calif., has announced its Rich Media Advertising Standard, a new mechanism for supporting all types of rich media. The standard will enable advertisers to use any rich media format on any advertising-supported Web site through AdKnowledge's centralized ad serving capabilities.
