Newspaper ad $ up 5.7%

Ad spending in newspapers reached $10.8 billion in the first quarter, up 5.7% from a year ago, according to the Newspaper Association of America, Vienna, Va. National advertising, at $1.8 billion, was up 18.7%, its largest quarterly percentage gain since 1983. Classified increased 6.7% to $4.4 billion, and retail edged up 0.5% to $4.6 billion.
