Newspaper ad spending up

Total newspaper advertising expenditures grew 8.9% for the first three quarters of 1997 compared to the same period the year before, according to the Newspaper Association of America. Third-quarter results show classifieds up 9.53% to $4.1 billion. Retail advertising rose 4.98% to $4.6 billion, while national advertising grew 13.28% to $1.3 billion.
