Newspapers report ad gains

Advertiser spending in newspapers increased 7.3% to $9.6 billion in the first quarter over the year-ago period, said Newspaper Association of America, Vienna, Va. Classified ads were up 9.8% to $3.9 billion; retail up 4.4% to $4.4 billion; and national up 9.9% to $1.4 billion, NAA said.
