If there's anyone that ought to put out a bullish report on newspapers online, it should be the Newspaper Association of America. NAA reports that more than one-third (36%) of 146 online newspapers surveyed turned a profit in 1996, and 24% said they expect their sites to be profitable within four years.
A majority of the sites (72%) sell classified advertising. Slightly more than half (52%) use a standardized banner size. And 65% of the sites have a distinct and separate new media staff dedicated to managing online editions of print news brands.
