No, there's nothing wrong with those new Northwest Airlines spots-it is Japanese you're hearing. In an unusual pitch to boost trans-Pacific travel, Northwest just broke the 30-second TV commercials in Japanese with English subtitles. The effort is the latest from Fallon McElligott, Minneapolis, in the campaign contrasting the old Northwest to the current airline. The spot that began Jan. 1 during nationally televised college football games and aired Jan. 2 in National Football League telecasts features Shigeaki Morita, retiring as manager of flight operations in Tokyo.
