The growing nutraceuticals market hit an estimated $4.5 billion in sales last year, according to new research from Frost & Sullivan, Mountain View, Calif. In its "U.S. Nutraceuticals & Functional Foods Markets," the marketing consultancy also anticipates significant growth in the highly fragmented nutraceutical field through forecast period 1998-2004. Large chemical or herbal supplement manufacturers dominate the nutritional supplement industry, while smaller companies with annual revenues of $20 million to $30 million make up the activity-based foods market. The functional beverage market contains both large companies and smaller herbal beverage manufacturers.
