"It is a personal decision he made to be closer to home," said a spokeswoman who noted that Mr. Rooney lives in Milwaukee. He will help identify a successor and aid in the transition of a new executive, she added. He was in charge of the BP account, which recently launched a new branding effort this fall.
"We'll miss him," said David Welsh, director of global retail communications and research at BP, Warrenville, Ill.
Mr. Rooney's departure "was nothing Ogilvy or BP asked for. His leadership has been really terrific. Ogilvy is looking very hard to replace him on our business."
He also said BP's management was informed by Ogilvy of Rooney's departure.
