The marketing giant announced Tuesday that it was backing SafirRossetti, a start-up business security and investigative consulting firm led by former New York City Police Commissioner Howard Safir.
"After the demise of Simon marketing and [the events of] Sept. 11, a lot of our clients expressed an interest in security-related services," said an Omnicom spokeswoman. "This is the first of its kind for Omnicom."
The shop will be based in New York and will provide corporations, law firms and government agencies with advice on "crisis management, business intelligence, executive and personnel protection, loss prevention, due diligence, trade secrets and intellectual property, computer forensics and general litigation support," according to a statement.
Mr. Safir's partner in the venture is Joseph Rosetti, the former vice chairman of Kroll Associates and former security director of IBM.
The terms of the Omnicom deal were not disclosed.
