Online spending by U.S. consumers increased to $8.3 billion in the second quarter from $7 billion in the first quarter, according to an online survey by Harris Interactive and U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray. Amazon.com ranked as the strongest e-commerce brand, followed by eBay, Yahoo! and priceline.com. Travel services remained the No. 1 category in sales--and was the fastest-growing major category, with online purchases jumping 19% from the first quarter to $2.4 billion in the second quarter. The survey was based on responses from 97,633 adult online users in the second quarter.
