Online sales hit light speed

By Published on .

Just how rabid were people about getting into the opening weekend of "Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith?"

Enough to buy 3.2 tickets per second on MovieTickets.com, and five tickets per second on competitor Fandango.com. The response from the core Web-savvy "Star Wars" fans broke the existing record for advance tickets sales on both sites, held by New Line's "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King."

MovieTickets.com alone was poised to sell as many as 4 million tickets for the much-anticipated end of the "Star Wars" saga.

Mitch Rubenstein, co-CEO of MovieTickets.com, said the site has seen 40,000 people a day registering in the last few weeks.

Executives at Fandango said "Sith" tickets accounted for 98% of the site's weekly sales.
